Sites that explore the beautiful world of slot canyons and introduce the people who enjoy descending into these primeval places. Slot canyons are very narrow canyons formed by the rushing waters of monsoon rains, going through sandstone, as a general rule. They are characterized by narrow passages, with the walls close together all the way to the top of the canyon. This results in almost abstract scenes where the play of sunlight on the walls produces fantastic coloration constantly changing, and where sunlight almost never penetrates to the bottom of the canyon. There are many slot canyons. The most famous, perhaps, is Antelope Canyon, located in northern Arizona near Page. Owned by the Diné Indians, it has two sections open to the public. One is accessible by guided tour only, and the other can be entered with a permit. Since some people have been killed by rushing water when they imprudently entered the canyon during monsoon season, the Diné are understandably cautious about visitors. This same warning would apply to any other slot canyon. Photo by Pat Goltz
