Charles Dickens (3 Sites, 6 Hits) 09/07/1999 genessa
Find in this ring sites pertaining to the life, times and works of Victorian English author, performer and social activist, Charles Dickens.  Born in Hampshire on February 7, 1812, he came to know London intimately and wrote of it both lovingly and unflinchingly. His childhood ended abruptly when his father was imprisoned for debt; young Charles was sent to work in a blacking factory and it changed his view of life, especially, specifically, the lives of children, whose concerns and sufferings are often portrayed in his novels. Not known as a feminist, he may well have been one, and although he didn't do it often he was able to write convincingly from the female point of view. His life was both exemplary and... less so. He saved lives, heroically, when he was involved in a horrid train wreck. He also treated his wife miserably and almost certainly had a longterm love affair with a young actress. He died of a stroke on June 9, 1870, having finished (in addition to impressive numbers of articles and short fiction) nearly 20 novels, and left unfinished one more: The Mystery of Edwin Drood.  He is pictured here in his younger days.
